The colors and pain

On chapters 12-14 Jonas has been learning and having more memories. Jonas was very curious about what happened to Fionna´s hair and the apple he wanted to know what was what he saw. The Giver explained to Jonas that he started seeing colors. Jonas started seeing the color red. At first Jonas was confused about all the thing about colors but later he will see them. Jonas was often sent away when the Giver was in pain. When this happened the Giver will be rocking himself trying to relief and forget the painful memory. Jonas was given a memory about elephants and hunters. In that memory he learned that people had different skin tones and colors. One day that the Giver was in pain Jonas offered himself to help the Giver  relief his pain by giving it to him. This memory was very painful because he experienced a broken bone. After the Giver gave Jonas the memory he felt less weighted. Jonas´s father was very tired because Gabe couldn't  sleep soundly and he was very loud at night. Jonas offered himself to take Gabe to his room so his father will get more sleep. Gabe was very loud at night so Jonas gave him a very relaxing and peaceful memory. This memory calmed and soothed Gabe.

"This time he quite deliberately placed his hand firmly on Gabriel's back, and released the rest of the calming day on the lake. Again Gabriel slept" (116-117, Lowry)

I wonder why Gabriel can get the memory. I predict that Gabriel can be a Receiver . I predict this because Gabriel has light eyes just like Jonas and the Giver.

"You'll be able to apply for a spouse, Jonas, if you want to. I'll warn you, though, that it will be difficult."

I think it is unfair that Jonas can have a spouse and a family but it will be very difficult because he has to keep so many things away from them.

In conclusion, Jonas has received some memories and he learned what are colors. Jonas has been taking care of Gabriel and transmitting some memories to him. I predict that in the future Jonas will have a family but he will have to hide many things away from them .

The Giver chapters 9-11 and quote analysis

On the last three chapters Jonas has been chosen as Reciever Of Memory. Every one, after the ceremony treated Jonas differently. Everyone hesitated when they saw him, they didn't know what to do. Even his friends Asher and Fionna. When a person is assigned, in this case chosen for Jonas, you were given a folder with a set of instructions. One of the instructions really upset Jonas. That instruction said that he could lie. When he read this he started to have questions about if every one else lied, if his parents did, but he will never be certain because he will never know... The next day it was everybody's first day for their training. Jonas went into the Annex building and there he met the current Reciever. When Jonas entered to the room he saw thousands of books. He only knew there where a few books but he didn't imagine so many of them. He greeted the current Reciever and asked him some questions. Next the current Reciever gave Jonas a few memories : snow and a sled and how did sun burn felt.

"He shook his head suddenly, and peered at Jonas. 'That meant nothing to you, did it?' He asked. Jonas was confused.'I didn't understand it, sir.' 'Of course you didn't. You don't know what snow is, do you?' Jonas shook his head." (Lowry, 78)
No one has memories of the past. No one practically knows anything. Why does there has to be a Reciever that has to hold all of the memories of the past? Why can't everyone have those memories? What's so bad about them?

"The old man wiped his forehead with his sleeve. 'Whew' he said. 'It was exhausting. But you know, even transmitting that tiny memory to you - I think it lightened me just a little.'" (Lowry, 82) I feel sorry for The Giver. He has lots of memories inside of him that it ages him and they weight a lot. Because of this assignment he has growed old and weaker every time. He has lots of memories.

In conclusion, Jonas has been assigned as the Reciever of memory and has finally met the Giver. The Giver has gave Jonas two memories. I really disagree the way they have assigned the Reciever to have all the memories of the past. I think it is very cruel to give so much memories to a person and make them bare those memories until a next Reciever is chosen. I predict that Jonas will have to bare some extremely painful memories but also some other pleasant and beautiful memories.

The Giver chapters 6-8 and quote analysis

In the last three chapters the day Jonas was waiting for has finally arrived. Everyone has gathered for the ceremony of everyone's years.  Lily is becoming a 8 and she is given pockets so she will take care of smaller things. Jonas explained Lily that the things they give to them get better every year. All the years males and females were given different things. When it was time for the twelves Jonas payed strict attention to everyone especially Asher who got the assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation. When it was Jonas's turn they skipped his number, he was very upset and worried he had lots of questions. Just when they got to the last number the Chief Elder made a apology to Jonas and to the community for bringing him anxiety. She explained that Jonas has been selected to be Receiver of memory. She also recalled the four qualities a Receiver wisdom, integrity, intelligence and courage. And also The Chief Elder explained Jonas had the ability of seeing beyond. Every one was saying his name "Jonas, Jonas!".

"You will be trained to be our next Receiver of Memory. We thank you for your childhood".(64)
I find it a bit odd when the Chief Elder thanks the twelves for their childhoods. Why would someone thank a kid for their childhood? What is it so important about the childhood for them? In our world the childhood is something you live not something you give. No one owns or no one receives your childhood.

"With the chant, Jonas knew, the community was accepting him and his new role, giving him life, the way they had given it to the newchild Caleb. His heart swelled with gratitude and pride." (64)
I feel very happy about Jonas being the new receiver. This is the most important point in his life and he will have the best job of the community. He has now a very good job and he has very good qualities.

In conclusion, Jonas has been selected as the Receiver of memory. This is one of the best assignments but one of the hardest. He has been selected because a long time ago another receiver was selected but he failed. Jonas in the other hand has been identified as a possible Receiver many years ago and there had been no dreams of uncertainty. I predict that in the future Jonas will be a very successful Receiver and that he will not fail.

The Giver : Quote analysis and summary of chapters 1-5

In the last few chapters Jonas has described his life style and how organized and controlling community he lives in. Every one in this community is given an assignment. Jonas has a sister named Lilly, and he has two parents. Jonas's Father works at the nurturing center where he takes care of newborn children. Father is currently taking care of a new born baby Gabe. Gabe is a bit special because he cannot develop as fast as a baby should and that worries Father because Gabe can get released. When you get released that means that you will never be part of the community again.  Jonas's Mother is a sensible and rational woman who has a honorable  position in the  Department  of Justice. Mother always takes her job seriously and always gives Jonas good advise. Lilly is a very bright and vivacious girl who always is talking and she doesn't quite know when to keep her mouth shut.  Every night there is a ritual. In this ritual all the members of the family share all the emotions they felt that day. Jonas started feel a bit concerned and uncertain about the ceremony of twelve. He was feeling this way because he wasn't sure what will the elders would assign him.  Jonas was also concerned about what the elders would give to Asher. Asher  is Jonas's best friend and he is a bit clumsy and a distracted boy. To keep the community in order there are various announcements made during the day to give people reminders and to reassure people of certain things. Jonas remembered this one time that he was playing with Asher to throw a apple to each other. During the game Jonas was surprised by something, the apple had changed in a way that Jonas

couldn't describe. Later that day he took the apple by accident which was forbidden but he had to examined it better. When Jonas got home the speakers reminded the citizens to not take food away. Jonas liked the freedom to choose were he will like to spend his hours volunteering. While he was riding his bike to the house of the old he saw Asher's bike and also Fionna's too. Jonas liked and appreciate very much Fionna. When he went to the House of the Old he went to bathe Larissa were both had a pleasant conversation. Later that night had a dream with Fionna, Jonas wanted to bathe Fionna in the dream. In the morning there was also a ritual were they shared their dreams. When Jonas told the dream he was interrupted by his mother and father. Mother told Jonas that the dream he told meant that he was ready for a treatment. This treatment was to prevent stirrings.

" ATTENTION. A REMINDER THAT STIRRINGS MUST BE REPORTED IN ORDER FOR TREATMENT TO TAKE PLACE." (37)

I find it unusual how stirrings or feelings of love towards someone should be reported and treated as it is a kind of sickness. I wonder why  people in the story think that  stirrings or feelings love towards someone is bad or it can cause problems. In our world feeling love towards someone isn't bad and it is  normal.  Why do you have to have a treatment for stirrings and why is it so important ?

To conclude I think that Jonas's world has no life and it is very strict. There are various rules the community must follow, and if it someone breaks them there is always a punishment or consequence .  Nothing can be different. Every thing that is different causes problems in their world. I predict that Jonas will have a assignment that he would like and that he will enjoy.

How much control should goverments have over their citizens?

Governments shouldn´t control too much their citizens.Governments should not have control over a persons emotions or feelings. Every one as a human has the right to to feel and to love or to care about someone. Governments don´t need to choose who your family should be or who you should marry. Also governments shouldn't take other citizens free will, or to make the citizens decisions.

In the Truman show, Christoff makes Truman´s decitions for him. Christoff chooses who will Truman will marry , who should he love, he also chooses his family and friends. Truman most of the time didnt had control of his life, Christoff even controls his emotions. Christoff was taking Truman´s free will and he was taking Truman´s emotions away. Governments shouldn't follow this example because this will take a human´s essence and the chance to make their own decitions.

In conclusion I think governments should have some control over their citizens but not absolute control. If the government has too much control over their citizens this might lead to strikes, or people that disagree with the government might rebel against them. The government should not have control over the citizens personal things such as: their feelings or emotions. The governments shouldn't be like Christoff in the Truman show, hypothetically Christoff would be the government and Truman would be the citizens , everything about Truman is controlled by Christoff.
